Articles / P5: Essential part of reality

Computers are evolving at an incredible speed. Pretty much the only device that has not evolved in many years is the keyboard - but is starting to change.

P5 Virtual Reality gloves [actually, a glove] has been under development under the wing of Essential Reality for the past three years. Unlike many other prototypes, P5 is scheduled to become available for purchase very soon. With a price tag of $130 US dollars and a lot of developer support [or so they are saying], this device may just be the next hottest thing, considering it replaces both keyboard and a mouse.

At first, the designers wanted to create a real glove, which would get put onto one’s hand completely. Later, however, it because evident that its much easier to just use small leather strips to connect the sensors to fingers – the hand wont get sweaty and the potential customer base would increase greatly.

The P5 glove can be used to point the direction, in which you wish to move, grab objects, shoot and pretty much do anything you’d like in the virtual world. Essential Reality says that their glove’s primary function is entertainment – image playing Counter-Strike or Mortal Combat with one of these. The manipulator can also be used by designers and animators [“take that sphere and move it riiiiight over here”], medics, teachers, and military.

First version of P5 will work only under Microsoft Windows and will connect only through a USB port. Support for Mac OS X and Linux, as well as X-Box and PlayStation II is under way.
